Contracting Hiv | Preventing Infertility In Women

Most people don’t realize that one of the leading causes if infertility in women in the US is the presence of an untreated sexually transmitted disease. There are two common sexually transmitted diseases, which can easily lead to infertility. There are Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Neither of these diseases have many noticeable symptoms, and can easily go unnoticed and untreated. 40% of women with these untreated sexually transmitted disease end up infertile. It is important to get tested for STDs every time you have a new sex partner, and limiting your number of partners is a great way to avoid contracting an STD.

Chlamydia: There are approximately 2.8 million new cases of Chlamydia in the US each year. It spreads quickly because most people don’t realize they have it. Chlamydia is caused by a bacteria called Chlamudia trachomatis. It can be passed through oral, vaginal or anal sex, and it can be passed from mother to child during child birth. Symptoms may include discharge, pain while urinating, nausea, or pain during intercourse. These symptoms generally don’t start until the disease is advanced. Women with Chlamydia also tend to be at a greater risk of contracting HIV than other women. A Chlamydia test can easily be administered during your annual pap test. However, if you have had unprotected sex or have had multiple partners, it is a good idea to be tested more regularly.

Gonorrhea: There are approximately 718,000 new cases of Gonorrhea each year in the US. Gonorrhea is also spread through oral, vaginal or anal sex, and from mother to child during child birth. It is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeao. It typically doesn’t show symptoms until it is advanced, and its symptoms include: discharge, spotting between periods, and pain during urination. Gonorrhea will also lead to infertility for women if left untreated. Gonorrhea can be detected through a urine test at your regular doctor’s office.
