matthewbedard 2 months ago Ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra won’t be the only one affected by today’s bulk seizure of his wealth. Much of the mobilization for the country’s rural, poor local goverment–a large faction of his support–will likely feel the difference, as it’s speculated Thaksin’s wealth is their primary source of funding. But it will also will have global ramifications.

In a recent The London Times interview, which was banned in Thailand, Thaksin shared on his investment in gold mines in “Uganda.” Why quotes around Uganda? Because Uganda doesn’t produce gold. Its neighbor the DRC does, much of which finances insurgent factions vying against the DRC government, who is also a benefactor of the blood gold. DRC civilians have long been caught in the cross-fire, some five million now dead.  More

Yasmine Ryan 2 months ago Outrage by government ministers, women’s rights advocates and family groups has halted a French anti-smoking campaign that uses the metaphor of sexual abuse to try to persuade teenagers that smoking is an act of dependence.

The postcards show a teenage boy or girl kneeling before an anonymous adult male.  The teens have a look of duress as the man appears to force a cigarette poking out of his pants into their mouths.

Luis Soriano, a schoolteacher in Colombia, has three things: a bunch of books, a pair of donkeys, and a passion for teaching kids to read. Turns out that’s all you need to make a difference.

When Soriano started teaching 17 years ago, he realized that a disproportionate number of his failing students came from Colombia’s poverty-stricken rural areas, CNN reports. So Soriano decided to do something about it. In his spare time, Soriano goes town to town with his “biblioburro,” a mobile, donkey-powered library. Twice a week he loads up his donkeys Alfa and Beto and heads out to hand out books, teach kids to read and help them with their homework.
